The Team (draft)

All of our teachers are volunteers who are completely in love with dancing and in particular the Lindy Hop. Our main goal is to spread our enthusiasm for the dance and the joy that it brings to us. It doesn’t matter how good or how experienced you are: our fundamental message is that if you are smiling whilst dancing, then you are doing it right!

Fey discovered Lindy Hop in 2014 as one of the ‘original’ Nijmegen dancers and immediately fell in love. From the beginning, she couldn’t get enough and went to every social and class she could find in Nijmegen, her hometown in the Netherlands. Very soon she became part of the teaching team at Lindy What? Nijmegen and this is how she spreads the Lindy love to all who want to dance with her. Fey is very much drawn to the social aspects of the dance. As such, she stands for having a lot of fun in her dancing, which she strongly believes is what Lindy Hop is all about. Whether it is dancing as a follower or a leader, to Fey, Lindy Hop is always about enjoying the music and playing around with it in every dance. Fey is …………………. and one of our regular teachers.

Gesa signed up for classes the minute she saw the joyful 1-year-anniversary-video of Lindy What!? After her first Lindy hops in Nijmegen, she spent three months in the US, where she joined a very active local college swing dance club, discovering that dancing is a great way to make new friends. Fast forward 5 years, Gesa still loves to combine travelling with workshops and visits to local socials, and she is amazed by how dancing connects people across cultures and languages. Gesa is involved in various organizing tasks behind Lindy What!? & What’s Hop!?, and one of our regular teachers. In her non-dancing life, she is an assistant professor at Utrecht University, where she studies learning and memory processes. Gesa is ………………………… and one of our regular teachers.

Laura began dancing Rock’n Roll as of Kindergarten with her two sisters and mother in the living room, and later on a passionate Latin American dancer during high school and Art Academy. She discovered Lindy Hop in 2018 at a Lindy What!? social and was instantly hooked, and in love with its warm community. Never before she realized how much fun dancing can be. Laura is a freelance Quartermaster in Change processes /  Assistant to the Board in her daily life; in her spare time part of the Lindy What!? team, making sure that our website stays up to date.

Lotte first came in contact with Lindy Hop when she was 17 year old, but it took about 10 years before she actually started learning Lindy Hop. Somehow, the focus on improvisation sounded scary to her. However, when Lotte joined improvisation theatre classes, she realized that she loves to improvise, because of the playfulness and unique unexpected moments improvisation creates. In 2017, when she completed a beginners crash course of Lindy Hop, she was sold. As a follower, she loves to use the freedom during a dance to play around and to add some crazy faces and movements. Socials make her super happy and she always makes an effort to dance with everyone. Indeed, you almost have no chance to talk with her during the socials, because she is always on the dance floor with her happy face. Lotte is one of our regular teachers.

Saskia is the newest member of the Lindy What teachers team and she is the one who is running our Instagram account. Saskia was born into a dancing family. Both grandparents met in the danceschool/on a dance party, her parents are passionate about dancing and her brother and cousins are dancing the Lindy Hop as well (family reunions at Lindy Hop festivals, yay!). Because of a lack of Lindy Hop scenes at the places where she lived, Saskia started with boogiewoogie. When she finally moved to Nijmegen in 2017, she signed up immediately for the next block at Lindy What and.. fell down a stair and broke her foot. She had to wait another half year but then she finally started and fell in love with the dance and the scene immediately. Lindy Hop is what makes her happy. She always has a bright smile on her face while dancing and it’s quite hard to talk to her on socials, because she is on the dancefloor all night long to dance the lindy hop (leading and following!), Charleston and collegiate shag. She loves to travel for socials across the country and is always checking local dance scenes when she is traveling.

Simon has been studying and performing jazz music since the early 90s but it was only in 2011 in Luxembourg that he discovered Lindy Hop, having being dragged to a dance class by a Swedish friend. He immediately fell in love with dancing and quickly became part of the teaching team at Swing Dance Luxembourg. In 2013 Simon moved to Nijmegen, where he became one of the founders of Lindy What? Nijmegen, where he has been teaching classes and workshops ever since. Lindy Hop has taken him all across Europe and even to Australia! With a strong focus on social dancing and technique, he is always looking forward to working and dancing with people he hasn’t met before and being presented with new dance challenges. Simon is currently not teaching any live classes for us because he is working in London.

Long before getting to know Lindy Hop, Simon Jan enjoyed partnered dancing through ballroom and salsa dancing. However, in 2017, when Lotte dragged him to a drop-in class and he experienced the playfulness and fun vibes of Lindyhop, he got instantly hooked. Ever since, he tries to go to as many classes, festivals and socials as he can. He loves the international community and he actively seeks out local dance scenes when traveling to distant places in the world. Doing this, he also learned that high altitude dancing deep in the Himalayas is so strenuous that he couldn’t even finish one complete song. For Simon, it’s all about having fun and he has yet to be seen dancing without a huge smile on his face. Simon is one of our regular teachers.
